Given its bloody 20th century history, it's easy to forget that Vietnam has a history as a nation going back over a thousand years, with centuries of self-governance, culture, and.

The Ten Thousand Day War is the best book on the subject I have ever read. As a student who already knew a good bit about the war, it deepened my knowledge, particulary in the French war in Indochina and America's involvement in it.
